Getting Through the Grief Stages

Oklahoma City Cremation • January 3, 2022

There’s no doubt that grief can feel like a confusing experience to have to maneuver, and it’s different for each individual so that it can feel unfamiliar at times. If you or someone you know has had to plan a  direct cremation in Yukon, OK , there can be a question about what to do as the feelings are processing, so understanding how to work through them easier can be highly beneficial.

Five Stages to Healing

It has been said that there are five distinct stages that an individual can go through when they are processing grief. These stages don’t always happen in exact order, and they can fluctuate going back and forth between the different emotions as the person processes their feelings.

One of the first stages is an individual can experience denial. This process is in place to allow the individual to begin processing the emotions that can come after they’ve experienced the loss. If you support someone who is experiencing this, one of the main things you can do is make sure that they have support to know they’re not going through it alone.

The next stage can come in anger, and since this is a more socially accepted emotion, it’s not uncommon for an individual to go through it. The person might become angry with the situation or even the person that has passed away. One of the main things to keep in mind is that the individual is processing emotions, so try to avoid taking anything personally and let them know you’re available if they need support.

Bargaining is another part of the healing process, and for some, it may look like the person offering amendments or offering to change something about themselves to heal the person or bring them back. It can feel unclear how to support someone as they’re going through this part of the process, but the primary focus is to stay present with their experience.

Another stage that can take place is depression which can signal that the individual is accepting what has happened and they’re beginning to understand they can’t change the situation. in this stage, it’s essential to check in with the person periodically and if they need extra help in a specific area of their life to do your best to support them.

The last stage is known as acceptance, and it doesn’t mean that there’s a lack of emotions or the sadness has disappeared; it simply means that the person is beginning to accept what is.
