Betty Jo Harrington

July 21, 1931 — June 23, 2023

Betty Jo Harrington, beloved aunt, sister, and grandmother passed away at the age of 91.  She joined her dearest husband, Henry, in death on June 23, 2023.  Bettywas born in Avery, Texas in 1931 to Lewis and Mattie (Armstrong) Johnston.  As a child, Betty picked cotton in the fields with her father.  When she was 18 years old, she met the love of her life, Henry, and they had three sons.  During the time she and Henry lived in Bisbee, Arizona, they owned Shamrock Dairy, and ran five trucks that delivered milk door-to-door.

Betty and Henry also owned and ran a restaurant in Guthrie, Oklahoma, called The Hilltop Café.  In 1987, Betty began working part-time as a media assistant/librarian in an elementary school library.  She had no idea that would turn into a full time 30 year + career.  Betty was affectionately known at Eugene Fields Elementary School as “Grandma,” and was very attached to those children and all of the teachers.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, and sons, Richard, Dennis and Jeff; her brothers, Lewis Johnston and Bobby Johnston, and beloved sister and best friend, Billie Ruth Lucas.  Betty is survived by her loving family, including one granddaughter, Angela Varney and her husband, Justin, and their three daughters, Kaylin, Natalynn and Brooklyn; a brother, Bobby Joe Johnston, sister-in-law, Frances Johnston, and many nieces, nephews and cousins, too many to mention.
