Dorothy Ellen Dunn

Dorothy Ellen Dunn died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and began the joy of everlasting life on March 4, 2017. Dorothy was born in Beloit, Kansas, on August 9, 1920, the only child of parents Clarence E. Amos and Mary Emmot Amos.

The family moved from Beloit to Tulsa, Oklahoma, when Dorothy was two-years-old. She was graduated from Central High School and attended the University of Tulsa. About this time, Dorothy trusted in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized. She married Bob Bass, who was later killed in a 1944 flight over Germany during World War II. On March 28, 1945, at age 24, Dorothy married her second husband, U.S. Army Air Force pilot Charles Levern Dunn, of Valentine, Nebraska. Following the war, the couple continued to live in Tulsa. They welcomed their daughter, Cheryl Anne, in May, 1948, and, later, a son, David Charles, in June, 1959. Charles and Dorothy were active members of the Southminster Presbyterian Church and the Southwood Country Club, where they made many wonderful friendships, among them the so-called “Jolly Eight,” a group of eight couples who played bridge and socialized regularly. In 1970, Charles and Dorothy moved from Tulsa to Oklahoma City. They were active members of the Central Presbyterian Church, where Charles served as an Elder and they jointly taught Sunday School to young children. Socially, they continued to play bridge on a regular basis and founded the Circle C Square Dance Club, where they made many new friends in their new city. Until she was unable to drive, Dorothy cooked regularly for Mobile Meals and played in many different bridge groups over several decades. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother—a kind soul and generous friend to all the people she met.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband, Bob Bass; second husband Charles, who retired as a Major in the U.S. Air Force; parents Clarence and Mary Amos; and granddaughter Whitney A. Snow.

She is survived by her children, Cheryl and Russell K. Snow, Jr., of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands; and David and Denise Dunn, of Edmond, Oklahoma. Other survivors include her nine grandchildren: Amy and Christelle Snow, of Balboa Park, Calif.; Sheridan and Caleb Salmon, of Tulsa; Brandon and Abi Smith, of Oklahoma City; Hayley and Andrew Browne, of Silver Spring, Maryland; Lenlie Dunn, of Edmond; Alexandria and Tyler Green, of Edmond; and Jonathan Dunn, Jillianne Dunn, and Christopher Dunn, also of Edmond. Dorothy also had eight great-grandchildren, whom she adored: Fulton, Isaac, and Zélie Browne; Isabelle and Stella Green; Ethan Salmon; Blakely Smith; and Cora Snow. Additional surviving close family members include Mary Lee and Karen and Bob Smith, with whom she enjoyed a great many holidays and birthday celebrations; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Satra, of Valentine, Nebraska. Evangelist D.L. Moody once said, “Do all the good you can, to all the people you can, in all the ways you can, as long as you can.” This described Dorothy’s generous heart, as all her family and friends knew well.

We were all truly blessed to have this kind, fun, generous, and gracious lady as a part of our lives for so many years. Rest in peace, dear Dorothy. We look forward to the day when we will see you again. We love you.
