Dorris Shofner

Beloved wife and mother, Dorris Shofner passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, June 21, 2017. She battled Alzheimers for 14 years. Dorris was born to Johnnie Burgess Gamble and Rosa Lauthria Gamble on September 21, 1932. Dorris grew up in Terrel, OK then moved to Ryan and later to Edmond where she graduated high school. She attended Central Sate College and graduated there in 1954. While at Central State she excelled in sports. The number one tennis court at UCO is named in her honor. The plaque reads, “The Dorris Shofner court to honor Dorris Gamble Shofner outstanding women’s athlete class of 1954.”. She married S.L. Shofner on August 7, 1954. They moved to Akron, Ohio where she taught classes at the YWCA. The union produced three children. When they returned to Oklahoma City she taught school in the Putnam City School District at Olverhoser Elementary in the same third grade classroom for twenty-five years. She retired in 1993 and they moved to Precott, Arizona for twelve years. They returned to Oklahoma City in order to be close to famil after she was diagnosed with Alzeheimers. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, S. L. Shofner, a daughter Sherry Shofner, and two sons Michael and Shannon Shofner all of Oklahoma City, two brothers, Rondal Gamble of Stillwater, OK and Johnnie Gamble and wife Debbie of Prescott, Arizona, three sisters-in-law, Ladell Peterson, Edmond, OK, and Jean Shofner of Oklahoma City, Billye Shofner of Eldorado, Arkansas. Dorris leaves several nieces and nephews and many, many friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 24, 2017 at the Church of Christ, 6035 Northwest 50th Street, Oklahoma City, OK. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that you make donations to the Church of Christ, 6035 Northwest 50th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73122 or a charity of your choice.
