It is with heavy hearts and much love we mourn the loss of our beloved Sloane (Shear) Dawson, of Edmond, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on September 12, 2022.
Sloane was born February 16, 1953 in Wichita Falls, Texas the third child to Warren David Shear, an independent oil and gas producer and wife Daphfine, homemaker and committee councilwoman. Sloane relished her young life growing up at the “Shear Joy” estate with her siblings in Duncan, Oklahoma while going to school and spending summers at her cherished Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas until her senior year at Duncan High when the family moved to Oklahoma City. Sloane settled in at John Marshall High School graduating in 1971 followed by two years at Mount Vernon in Washington D.C. Passionate about anything she did, Sloane was very committed and fiercely competitive whether she was playing in tennis tournaments, bowling league, karaoke contest, board games, dice, cards, bunco, she was truly a winner and loved the camaraderie and building life-long relationships. Sloane was adventurous and loved to travel overseas with her family and in 1979 enjoyed a trip to Hawaii with best friend Joan McCord. Music was a huge mainstay throughout her life, and come rain or shine, she went to as many concerts and music festivals she could. Sloane never met a stranger, with her big-heart and infectious smile and over-the-top-fun-loving spirit, she felt most comfortable and loved when she was surrounded with friends and family. She absolutely adored being an aunt to her nieces and nephews as her siblings began having their families and spending quality time with them was truly a beacon of light in her life.
Sloane met Rick Dawson at their 15-year High School reunion marrying on August 8, 1987, they resided in Edmond until 1991 when they moved to Texas eventually settling in Liberty Hill.
Together they spent the next 29 years rooting for their beloved Texas Longhorns, adopting their fur babies Scooter, Summer and Winston all while clearing land, moving a 100-year-old home, building barns, decks and creating the most amazing resort-like pool area complete with palm trees and spa, and then building their dream home from scratch and Palapa Palms was born!! Ever so talented, Sloane could paint, decorate and restore anything. She was also an amazing community organizer, event planner, fundraiser, ultimate hostess and fabulous cook, a member of the garden club, started a Liberty Hill bunco group, started her own candle company “Sloane’s by Design” just to name a few. She and Rick volunteered and helped organize and create Foundation Park, a park with a track for Liberty Hill school students, (go Panthers) to train on and a place for others to gather, socialize and walk their dogs. Life was good until a life changing health emergency with Rick in 2019 brought Sloane to the realization of needing to pack-up sell their house and move back to Edmond. The tremendous amount of help from her friends and community enabled her to be a loving and devoted caregiver to Rick, a fierce momma bear to her baby boy Winston and gave her the strength and resolve to move, remodel and get them settled into their new home. Sloane was just getting her groove back by starting a bunco group, adult group swim at the neighborhood pool, and reconnecting with everyone when a sudden series of strokes caused her to fly away home to the loving arms of her parents Warren and Daphfine and dearest friend Joan who went before her.
Sloane is survived by her husband Richard “Rick” Dawson of 35 years, their precious fur baby Winston, Sloane’s eldest sister Ken Sue Doerfel, husband Steve of Lawton, OK, daughter Lundy Doerfel of Lawton, son Josh Doerfel, wife Victoria of Tulsa and daughter Gabriella, Second sister Lynn Balint, husband Tom, of Celina, Texas, eldest daughter Erin Hogue, husband Kyle of Southlake, TX, Sarah Bravo, husband Arthur, of Dallas, TX, daughter Olivia Bravo and son Thomas Bravo, Sloane’s brother David Shear, wife Beverly, of Edmond, OK, son Leigh Shear, wife Bri, of Oklahoma City.
Memorial donations maybe made in Sloane’s honor to her cherished Camp Mystic, Hunt Texas.
